An defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to avoid discussing secret matters in all cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recent interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.
He explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in every modern cars.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This broader defence situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of official operations, including transport use to discussions habits.
