RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
